(11 posts)The hard drive took a dump and now only makes lots of clicking noises. The computer won't boot at this point. I had my important files backed up, so there isn't any issue of data recovery. I don't have a backup recovery or boot disk. I do have a new hard drive and the XP Pro OS. I can install the hard drive but how do i boot the computer to install the OS?
The OS is on a DVD/CD, right. Just boot from the CD. Enter the BIOS setup to set it to boot from the CD.

Currently with HD connected i cannot enter bios. Press F2 but nothing happens. Could this be more than a bad HD.

The HDD and the BIOS are independent of each other. The BIOS is stored on a chip on your motherboard. Even if the HDD was dead or unrecognised, you would still be able to access the BIOS. In fact, that's the best way to see if your HDD is being detected.
To access the BIOS on a Gateway:
Start up your computer and keep tapping the F1 key or the F2 key at one-second intervals
I was able to find the gateway os disk and i was also able to get into the bios (F2). I set the dvd drive as the boot disk and saved. Put the disk into the optical drive and now i have the monitor coming up with gateway logo.
I get the error code:
PXE-E61 media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F Exiting intel boot agent
No bootable device--insert boot disk and press any key
Are you tapping a key ???
The boot is falling through the CD Boot to the next device which is Boot from network.
Do you you have another known good Bootable CD / DVD disc ????

I tried the Gateway OS disk
The Win 2000 bootable disk that i have
and also the norton 360 backup disks that i made.
Still the same message.Doubt the optical drive and the hard drive would be trashed at the same time.
sounds like the harddrive you are going to use may not be formatted and the win2K can do this only if the hard drive is set up correctly but the error messages you are getting refer to the IDE cble check to make sure tyey are snug if they are try replacing them

The hard drive and both optical drives are bad. Put in a spare drive from work as well as using an old optical drive and was able to load the gateway recovery/OS.
Will buy new HD and optical drive and i should be set.
